In Genshin Impact, you will need to manually level up your characters to make them stronger. It is one of the core mechanics of the game. It might sound confusing for people who’re into the RPG genre, but you don’t want to slay the enemies. You’d want to use the special EXP materials instead.
EXP materials as the main source
Although characters do receive experience for slaying enemies, the amount they receive from such activity is extremely small. Instead, you’ll want to use the EXP materials you find around Teyvat:
- Wanderer’s Advice (worth 1,000 EXP)
- Adventurer’s Experience (worth 5,000 EXP)
- and Hero’s Wit (worth 20,000 EXP)
Meanwhile, slaying most of the monsters only gives your character about 15-20 points of experience, so the difference is huge.
Where to obtain EXP materials?
These three variations of EXP materials can be found in treasure chests and are often given as rewards for completing domains and quests. A luxurious chest, for example, can drop you up to three pieces of Hero Wit. However, the fastest way to obtain them is to use some Resin by completing the Blossom of Revelation Ley Line Outcrops.
You can find the Blossom of Revelation Ley Line Outcrops on the map. These blue orbs are visible on your map and appear in various places. You can activate them and they will summon enemies you’d have to take down. It shouldn’t be hard as long as you don’t have any issues dealing with the regular open-world enemies, since they’re essentially the same.
Once you finish them off, you can be rewarded with 6-7 Adventurer’s Experiences and 4-5 Hero Wits in exchange for 20 pieces of Resin. This means you can get up to 135,500 EXP from a single flower, or 1,080,000 EXP per day if you spend the whole daily stock of Resin on these flowers. While it sounds like a lot for the low-level characters, it’s not that much for the high-level characters, so you might need to spend a few real days to gain the needed amount of materials.
How to use the EXP materials?
When you have materials, you can press the “Level Up” button on the character screen to use them. Go into your “Characters” menu, in the scrollable list above find the character you want to level up, and press the “Level Up” button. From there, choose the material you want to use, and using the plus symbol add as many pieces as you want. Press the “Confirm” button when you’re finished.
Note that you won’t get your materials back if you exceed the character’s limit. If you’re short on materials, use them wisely. For example, start by using the Hero Wits, and then finish the line with some Wanderer’s Advice.
Once your character reaches a certain level, they’ll also need to Ascend using materials collected from bosses to continue leveling up. You’ll see a red “Max” notice when you would not be able to add much more materials without Ascending your character.
Keep in mind that using these materials to level up your characters will require Mora, the currency of the Genshin Impact world. Leveling up multiple characters to their high levels does eat up a lot of Mora, but you can grab more by dealing with the Blossom of Wealth flowers that spawn enemies you have to defeat.
